Saul Bennett (David Ritchie) in 1995

Saul Bennett ran the Children of Saul cult which was based near Yabbie Creek. A charismatic, manipulative and evil man, he lured Selina Cook into his cult. Although Selina escaped his clutches, it wasn't the last she was to see of him. Saul was shot dead by Constable Terri Garner in 1997. He was played by the late David Ritchie.

Backstory[]

Saul began his cult sometime in the late 1960s/early 1970s. As well as being skilled at luring people into joining the cult, he was adept at bedding its female members. Alex Bennett revealed to Shannon and Irene that Saul had charmed his mother into joining the cult while she was still a teenager. By the time she realised she wasn't the only lady in his life it was too late - she was pregnant with Alex. Mother and son later left the commune. By the time Saul met Selina in 1995, his commune was based in Yabbie Creek.

1995-1999[]

Saul met Selina not long after she had miscarried her child. Sensing that she was in a vulnerable place, he convinced her to join his commune. Selina almost became mother to yet another of Saul's many children when he tried to convince her that her lost baby would be reincarnated if she had another one. Selina came to her senses and escaped, only to be almost kidnapped by Saul. He was foiled by Alex and jailed. Saul didn't get the memo about kidnapping and jail being a bad mix - on his release Irene's grandson Paul was kidnapped. When his son Joey Rainbow and Selina returned to the commune to try and find the child, he captured Selina. He tried to kill the pair of them by setting a room on fire. Selina was rescued and it was assumed that Saul was dead.

This assumption turned out to be wrong. Saul kidnapped Selina - again - when she was on her way to her wedding to Steven Matheson. This time, Saul actually ended up dead, shot by Constable Terri Garner.

Another of Saul's children - Joey Rainbow - left the cult in 1996 and moved in with Irene. In 1999, Joey learned he had schizophrenia and had visions of his father when having a bad episode.
