Murray Granger was a minor character in 2013. He was the leader of a cult called Sanctuary Lodge. Members of his cult included Ethan MacGuire and his twin children Evelyn and Oscar. He tried unsuccessfully to stop the twins from being removed from the camp by their uncle Zac MacGuire and Darryl Braxton. Not to be deterred, he later came to Summer Bay looking for them. He threatened to get the police involved until Oscar reminded him of a beating he'd dished out. Evelyn later returned to the cult.
Spencer Harrington later joined the cult, hoping that it would help his bipolar disorder. Spencer's brother Chris tried unsuccessfully to take his brother out of the cult. Instead, Murray convinced Spencer to reject his brother and to punch him. Spencer changed his mind about how things were going when he learned he was expected to marry Evelyn. When he refused, Murray hit him and had him taken away to be beaten. The incident was filmed on a phone. Evelyn later handed it over to the police and Murray was arrested.
