Jean Chambers

Aunty Jean (Maggie Kirkpatrick)

Jean Chambers was Marilyn Chambers' aunt who took her niece out of a children's home and brought her up. Even though Marilyn had always seen her as a mother figure, she came to realise in 1991 that Aunty Jean wasn't quite the person she thought she was. Jean was played by Maggie Kirkpatrick

1991[]

In May 1991, Jean came to stay for a short holiday with Marilyn in the Beach House. At that time, Marilyn was renting out rooms to Bobby Simpson, Sam Nicholls and Nick Parrish. Bobby and Nick disliked her straight away but Marilyn was blind to this. Jean and Bobby openly disliked each other and before long, Jean's sneaky and manipulative behaviour had her and Sam moving out. Bobby correctly predicted that Jean would next begin work on ejecting Nick from the house.

Episode 767

Jean fakes a bad back

Jean faked a bad back to extend her stay with Marilyn and it soon became clear that this "holiday" had no end date. Eventually, Marilyn figured out what was going on. Jean admitted she had fallen out with her flatmate Daphne and was now penniless and homeless. Marilyn was hurt that her aunt had lied to her and was taking her for a ride. Deciding she had to go, Marilyn contacted a church group in the city who arranged accommodation for her aunt.

Furious, Jean revealed to Marilyn that her mother hadn't died after all. Instead, she had abandoned her in a children's home because she couldn't be bothered looking after her. Jean had chosen not to tell Marilyn the truth because she felt she was protecting her. Although Jean had taken Marilyn out of the home and raised her, it was obvious that she continued to harbour a lot of resentment towards her. She told Marilyn that if she hadn't been saddled with her, she might have been able to make a life for herself. This bombshell led to Marilyn searching for her real parents who turned out to be pretty awful.

Marilyn had been led to believe Jean was almost penniless. This turned out not to be the case when she later rang the accommodation where Jean had been placed. She had gone on holiday...
