Steven Matheson (1988)
Steven Matheson was a character in Home And Away from the pilot episode until January 1991 (Episode 690), He returned in July 1995 (Episode 1738) and became a series regular again, before departing for the second time in October 1997 (Episode 2273). He made brief returns in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2008. Steven was originally a student but later became a teacher at Summer Bay High School. He was played by Adam Willits.

Backstory[]
Steven grew up in the city, the only child of Brett and Martha Louise Matheson. In 1987, his parents died in a house fire. Steven survived because he was staying overnight with a friend who lived nearby. He was fostered by Tom and Pippa Fletcher.
1988-1990[]
Steven moved to Summer Bay along with the rest of the Fletcher family. At the time of the move, he still hadn't completely settled into his new family and had a testy relationship with foster brother Frank. Things improved on that front and Steven settled in Summer Bay. His first girlfriend was Sandra Barlow but it was short-lived. Sandra's mother Kerry became Home and Away's first death when she was shot by her husband Sam. Sandra was fostered and moved away. It wasn't long before Steven became attracted Narelle Smart who was 4 years older than him and got in plenty of snogging practice with her. Later on, he was to fall for another older woman - Jennifer Atkinson who was a mere decade older than he was.
Steven was delighted when his uncle Philip came to live in Summer Bay. Tragically, he too was killed in a house fire, proving perhaps that Mathesons and fires don't mix well. In a bitter plot twist, Steven eventually learned that his new foster brother Dodge had started the fire and was responsible for Philip's death. Another sinister character Steven encountered during his first spell in Summer Bay was Gary Samuels, son of teacher Jeff. Gary accidentally killed himself, to the regret of nobody. Steven later dated Viv Newton but that ended after she left town to live with her mother and sister.
As well as being a good athlete, Steven was intelligent and studious. It was no surprise, then, that he got good marks in his HSC. In early 1991, he moved away to start life at university. He wasn't seen again until 1995, though he continued to be mentioned from time to time by other characters.
1995-1997[]
Steven and Selina (1998)
Steven returned to Summer Bay. Despite his early academic promise, things hadn't quite gone to plan. And so, he took a job teaching in Summer Bay High even though it wasn't really what he wanted. He begins an affair with student Selina Roberts which eventually leads to him losing his job, He later found the time to have a fling with Kelly Watson, who was dating Travis Nash. In April 1995, Steven's nemesis Dodge returned. Not happy that Steven had played a part in him being banged up in prison years earlier, he began to cause trouble for him. It culminated in them having a tussle on the top of a cliff (as you do). Both went over the ledge and into the sea. Steven was rescued by Shane Parrish but Dodge was never seen again....
In 1997, Steven reconciled with Selina and they got engaged. On their wedding day, she was kidnapped by cult leader Saul Bennett, leading Steven to think she had jilted him. Although Selina was rescued, she told Steven she wasn't ready to marry him yet and left to go travelling. Steven left Summer Bay soon afterwards.
1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2008[]

Steven in 2008
In 1998, Selina contracted malaria in Africa and ended up recuperating in Ironbridge in England. After being contacted by Irene, Steven travelled to be with her. The pair resumed their relationship and became engaged again. Selina hadn't finished travelling, so Steven agreed to travel with her. He married Selina (offscreen) in the early 2000s, though the pair soon split up and he met somebody new.
Steven briefly returned for one-off events such as Summer Bay's 150th Anniversary and foster sister Sally's non-wedding to Kieran. He was last seen in 2008 when Sally left the Bay
The last time Steven was seen, in 2008, he revealed that he and Selina had reconciled and were back together again. As to whether they're still together....that depends whether you're reading this on an odd or even numbered day, and if the moon is in Aquarius at the moment.
