Synopsis[]
Ben is still stubbornly refusing to take the job offered by Michael Ross. Neither he nor Carly have failed to notice the mechanic's job is being advertised in the local paper. Ben spots a different ad for leaflet dropping and makes contact. He and Carly can earn $35 each for doing this job.
Alf and Ailsa are worried about Blake. Ailsa says she'll have a word with Karen but she thinks he might need to have some counselling. They're agreed that it is connected to his mother's death.
Steven and Marilyn finish their history exam. An annoyed Mr Fisher takes them to his office for a word because they were so late for the exam. They're lucky he allowed them to sit the paper at all. They apologise and explain how they overslept. He accepts their apologies and then takes the opportunity to say some nice words to them.
Grant and Ailsa ask Karen if Blake had ever had grief counselling - he didn't. Karen doesn't think he needs it though but promises to talk to him anyway. When she does, it becomes obvious that she's in on Blake's secret. He believes that his bad behaviour in the past stressed his mum so much, she developed cancer. He has no intention of telling anybody about it and he will not go to counselling. Instead, he plans to make up a story that'll throw the adults off the scent. And so, he he tells Alf that he was upset because it was his mum's birthday the day before. He tells Grant the same story and apologises. Donald approaches Grant once Blake is gone and say he overheard their conversation. At least he knows what's wrong now. Grant isn't so sure - he thinks Blake's story is too cut and dried.
Carly and Ben's gruelling day of leaflet dropping was a complete waste of time. After adding up all the expenses they incurred over the day, including Carly's shoes being ruined, they're down money. The day cost them $77.85 and they only earned $70. Reluctantly, Ben agrees to sign on the dole.
A sad Blake lies on his bed with a photo of his mum beside him. In a voiceover, he says he's sorry and would do anything to make it up to her.
